Custom paper tubes

Plan a cylindrical presentation pack around your product’s fit, removal, artwork and handling, then send the measurements and use details needed for project-specific pricing and timing.

Custom paper tubes are cylindrical paperboard packages used to create an outer presentation around a product. Keep product-contact requirements separate from the tube’s outer presentation.

Paper tube containers are also described as paperboard canisters or spiral-wound tubes. Construction, lining and closure vary with the intended use, as explained in Sonoco’s overview of paper tube packaging.

PakMagik reviews paper tube enquiries individually. Specifications, pricing and timing are confirmed for each project rather than selected from an online catalogue.

Compare a paper tube with rectangular packaging

Choose a cylindrical pack when its shape and opening experience suit your product, display and packing process. Then check the tradeoff: a tube uses shelf, storage and shipping space differently from a rectangular pack.

Compare the format with a folding carton or rigid box. The right choice depends on your product dimensions, packing method, presentation goal and handling requirements—not shape for shape’s sake. You can also use our custom packaging overview to compare related formats.

Measure the space your product can actually use

Check fit, cap clearance and removal before artwork begins:

  • Usable internal diameter: Measure the widest part of your product and record the clearance it needs.
  • Usable internal height: Include the complete product and any space needed for the base, support or closure.
  • Cap fit: Decide how you want the tube to open and close so the closure can be addressed during project review.
  • Product removal: Check whether fingers can reach the product and lift it without difficulty.
  • Internal support: Define how the product should sit at the base instead of assuming the tube will hold it in position.

A tea jar shows why removal space matters

For a glass tea jar inside a presentation tube, measure the jar with its lid fitted, define the support needed at the base and leave enough access for someone to reach and remove it. In this hypothetical example, the glass jar remains the product-contact container while the tube provides the outer presentation.

Keep direct product contact in the primary container

Do not assume a paper tube can directly contain your product. Record whether the contents remain in a jar, bottle, pouch or another primary container. If you want the tube to contact the product, the exact construction, lining and barrier evidence must be reviewed for that product and use.

Describe the opening, appearance and package role you want so the construction and any lining can be reviewed together.

Build wrap artwork after dimensions are confirmed

Cylindrical artwork wraps around the pack, so there is no automatic front panel. Identify the main viewing area, preferred seam position and copy that must remain easy to find. Check how the cap and base affect the visible artwork area too.

Do not finalize your layout from estimated dimensions. Confirm the project structure and artwork area first, then prepare your files using the PakMagik artwork guidelines. Artwork review does not establish structural performance, product-contact suitability or barrier performance.

Record the details needed to scope price and timing

Paper tubes do not have a configured online price. A project quote requires your usable internal diameter and height, cap and base requirements, product-removal needs, requested materials and finishes, any lining or barrier requirements, artwork and seam direction, and expected shipping or retail handling.

Send measurements rather than asking for “something that fits.” The project quote needs a defined product and packing arrangement.

Send your measurements for project review

Gather your measurements and supporting photos or drawings, then submit the paper tube project form for specification, pricing and timing review. If you need help describing the project first, contact PakMagik.

Questions to check before requesting a quote

Is a paper tube automatically recyclable?

No environmental claim is established for PakMagik paper tube projects. Any claim would need evidence for the complete construction, including its lining and closure, rather than relying on the word “paper.”

Does a paper tube replace a shipping carton?

Not by default. Tell us whether the tube will face shipping or retail handling and whether another outer pack is needed. The required construction must be reviewed for that use.
