Aubergine Velora rigid gift box with lift-off lid and fitted candle insert

Built around your product

Custom rigid boxes

Plan your rigid box around the real product, opening sequence, insert and artwork, then submit one complete specification for project-specific pricing, timing and construction review.

Start with the product, not a guessed box size

A custom rigid box is a presentation format made from thick board covered with a paper wrap. Unlike a folding carton, it generally remains assembled rather than folding flat. The Paperboard Packaging Council’s explanation of paperboard formats provides more context on this general construction difference.

Measure each item, record its weight and note fragile areas. Decide how the customer will lift everything out. Use those details to review the box dimensions, insert and opening before the project specification, price and timing are confirmed.

Choose how the customer will open the box

Compare how a lift-off lid, drawer or hinged concept would open around your product.

  • Lift-off lid: Decide whether the contents should appear together as soon as the lid is removed and how the customer will grip the lid and base.
  • Drawer concept: Identify the pull direction, how the contents should stay positioned and how far the drawer needs to open for removal.
  • Hinged concept: Check lid movement, product clearance and whether the open box needs to hold a particular presentation angle.

If compact storage and packing efficiency matter more than a permanently assembled presentation format, compare custom folding cartons. Folding cartons generally store and ship flat before setup, while rigid boxes generally do not.

Plan the insert around removal as well as display

If your concept includes a fitted insert, map every item, its orientation and the space needed to lift it out. Record anything that could scratch, shift, leak or break, along with accessories, instructions or cables that need separate positions.

For a hypothetical two-candle gift set, begin with the actual jars and lids. Decide whether the jars need separation, where fingers can reach each one and whether both candles should appear together when the box opens. Presentation and parcel protection are separate decisions: a handsome gift box doesn’t automatically become a shipping carton.

Fit your artwork to the wrap and construction

Artwork should follow the structure and wrap layout confirmed for your project. Identify the primary viewing face, artwork orientation and any graphics that cross an edge. Before placing important text or imagery, check where wrap seams, turn-ins and construction boundaries are expected to sit.

Include requested materials and finishes in your quote request, but treat them as requests until they are confirmed for the specific structure. Keep logos, small type and critical details away from unconfirmed seams or folds. Review our artwork guidelines before preparing final files.

Keep the quote specifications consistent

Rigid-box pricing and timing are confirmed for the individual project. Use the same scope when requesting or comparing quotes so a change in structure, quantity or packing assumptions doesn’t look like a simple price difference.

  • Finished dimensions and the size and weight of everything inside
  • Preferred opening concept and the intended removal sequence
  • Insert concept, compartments and access requirements
  • Artwork coverage and requested materials and finishes
  • Quantity, assembly and packing requirements
  • Outer shipping package and intended distribution route
  • Required timing

Plan parcel protection separately from presentation. Distribution testing should match the actual packaged product and intended route. The International Safe Transit Association’s test-procedure overview explains why different products and distribution conditions call for different testing approaches.

Compare the full packaging system before requesting a quote

Use the custom packaging overview to compare related formats. If transit protection is the main concern, review corrugated packaging as a separate part of the packaging system.

What should I provide if my product dimensions are not final?

Provide the latest dimensions and clearly label them as provisional. Include the expected range of variation and identify which components may still change. Final specifications, pricing and timing need review against confirmed dimensions.

Can one insert work for several product variants?

It depends on how the variants differ in size, shape and weight. List every variant and its dimensions so an adaptable insert concept can be compared with separate inserts. Suitability must be confirmed for the actual products.

How should I compare different rigid box quotes?

Check that each quote uses the same dimensions, quantity, opening concept, insert requirements, artwork coverage, requested materials and finishes, assembly assumptions, shipping needs and timing. A lower total may reflect a different specification rather than the same box for less.
